Monstrous Digital Healthcare Gap in the U.S, and Beyond.

By: | Tags: , , , , , , ,

I have addressed this subject previously in numerous presentations and speeches going back to the late 1990’s, and at a university healthcare forum in 2008. Last month the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) published a report that reminded me of the problem, and prompted me to move half a dozen other blog discussions to the back burner. In the April 24, 2008 university healthcare forum, I discussed that the per capita investment in technology by healthcare ranks 9 out of 10 industries with only the food processing industry lower. This MGI […]

America’s Unique Drug Problem

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

We in the U.S. spend more on prescription drugs than any other country on earth. Put another way, we spend per capita more on pharmaceuticals alone than the following countries spend in TOTAL on healthcare (normalized in U.S. dollars) – Ukraine, Peru, Iran, Columbia, South Africa, Mexico, Poland and Russia. This brings an interesting perspective. In 2014, U.S. drug spending was up 12.2%; however, actual out-of-pocket spending for prescription drugs is actually down 14% since 2007. Where is this difference being spent? Government and private insurance programs. The argument is […]

Consumerism in Healthcare 2016 and Beyond Pt. 3

By: | Tags: , ,

Part 3 In Part 1, we briefly discussed a few emerging trends in healthcare that seem to be gathering momentum; including the impact of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA). In Part 2, we discussed how the internet, and particularly Google, has changed “consumer engagement” and what the healthcare industry must invest to catch up with consumer demand for interconnectivity to “everything.” This trend is irreversible and even more likely to pick up steam in the next 4 years. Think of it in terms of a hockey stick; we’re […]

Consumerism in Healthcare 2016 and Beyond

By: | Tags: , , , ,

Part 1 There are many trends emerging today in healthcare that seem to be gathering momentum. Some may credit changes to the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA), some may credit changes in demographics, some the advancement in technology, while others the success of increasing consumer engagement. Regarding changes due to the ACA; yes, the ACA has disrupted some elements in healthcare, but in the totality of its context, the ACA seems to have brought about more challenges than solutions. It is self-evident that a lot of work remains and […]

Did the world’s largest industry – by revenue – just get bigger?

By: | Tags: , , , , ,

We have many times referred to the fact that healthcare is the world’s largest industry and is statistically destined to be one for generations to come. It has been hard for people to rationalize, thinking maybe food or even defense industries are larger; however, the facts are getting bigger. The world’s healthcare industry is estimated to have $7 trillion (USD) in total revenues, with the US accounting for about $3 trillion (USD); but according to a new study, the “Longevity Economy” is now a $7.1 trillion (USD) economy in the […]

Healthcare in the age of Uber, eBay and Facebook.

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Today is an amazing time to be involved in most industries. This week I read articles in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that separately discussed the taxi and transportation revolution brought on by Uber, Inc., and the transformation traditional media companies are making to quickly adapt to on-line advertising. It has been fascinating to watch Uber’s “application” of driven on-demand, morph the transportation business. Many cities, counties, states and even governments have challenged Uber because their “technology” is disruptive to the status quo; yet the outcomes have nearly always favored […]
