Modernizing Medicare Version 2017

By: | Tags:

Since the beginning of the PWeR News blog, we have discussed that there are two major trends in healthcare; one being the change of payments, and second, the use of technology. Last week the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it’s largest initiative ever, to transform and improve how primary care is delivered and paid for in America. “The effort, the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC+) model, will be implemented in up to 20 regions and can accommodate up to 5,000 practices. This effort […]

Patient Care Impacted by Mobile Secure Text-Messaging

By: | Tags:

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania (U-Penn) published a fascinating new study, in The Journal of General Internal Medicine, suggesting that “texting” may improve patient care . This study comprised more than 10,000 patients at two different hospitals. Through other published articles, we know that more than one study has suggested that mobile secure text messaging may improve communication; however, this new study is among the first to assess its impact on patient outcomes. Patients, whose hospital care providers used mobile secure text-messaging as a means of communication, had a […]

Mind-Blowing Demographics Shift

By: | Tags:

Recent articles in the news this past week depressed me, and that is hard to do. Aside from global healthcare and technology, the article covered one of my favorite subjects, demographics. In my mind, global healthcare, technology, and demographics are all connected. The article, “Mind-Blowing Demographics Shift” discussed more than the old (baby-boomers) and young (millennials) we have talked about. The focus of the article was about what is going on in the oldest of the developed economies, Japan. The last time I looked, Japan’s average life-span age was 10 […]

U.S. Elections 2016

This week, we had so many great ideas to chat about; however, I read a headline that guided me in a different direction. The headline was actually advertising from Oppenheim Funds. The title said, “Presidents change. The right way to invest doesn’t.” I have now been in healthcare for 4 presidents. I was there when everyone in the industry was having a melt-down over HillaryCare. From her own lips, she recently stated,“it was called HillaryCare before it was called “ObamaCare.”ObamaCare really refers to the Affordable Care Act of 2010. I […]

HIMSS 2016, Part 3

By: | Tags: , , , , , ,

As we noted in our last two blogs blog “every year the best and the brightest in health information technology industry via the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) annual meeting meet for a week. This year it was in Las Vegas, Nevada. I will admit, I missed it; and maybe I should have gone to this one. I have received 100s of industry emails. Something certainly happened; so I will take two more blogs, this and the next, and move on to other things.” The first part of […]

HIMSS 2016 Part 1

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Every year, the best and the brightest in the health information technology industry, via the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society’s (HIMSS) annual meeting, meet for a week. This year, it’s in Las Vegas, Nevada. An amazing experience I have enjoyed on more than one occasion. The convention is attended by sizeable healthcare delivery systems, clearly large and small technology companies. Almost always missing; actual healthcare providers. The sad news of that is, everyone is building and demonstrating technology that impacts the providers more than anyone. In the 3 times […]

Sharing Patient Data, What is next?

As all American’s begin the process of assembling financial records to file their personal income taxes, it has come to mind, how easy the process has become to pay our personal taxes. Today the information flows in and flow out via your computer. You can now synchronize you credit cards and checking account in the cloud and prepare your financial statements and then file your taxes online. Yet, currently 50% of all medical offices still have paper medical records. Of those, approximately 50% that have meaningful use software, an even […]

Cloud Computing and Tech Spending

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

This week the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) published an article that was full of good news for most, but concern for others; and this, in our opinion, is just the beginning of the technological shift we are all witnessing. The article was entitled “Cloud Computing May Be Hampering Tech Spending: Analyst Report” . As a long-time proponent of technology; for instance, cloud SaaS models (Software as a Service) for electronic medical records and most other computer-centric services; this got our attention fast. The article discussed what seems to be a […]

Technology is going to transform healthcare! On this week’s blog, we are expressing the news and our perspective, and it has generally been focused on the cross-roads and technology. Recently, we have been adding another dimension; generational economics and healthcare. I love to read about our industry, and with more than 10 patents issued, and another 20 pending, technology and innovation drive me. A friend of mine once called me a futurist, and to this day I wonder if that was a good thing, or a bad thing? We have […]
